A year after finishing in third place as a team at the Class 1A state boys' golf meet, the Alleman Pioneers were hoping to pull off a similar feat at the 2A level.
Competing at Monday's 2A Metamora Sectional, the Pioneers secured themselves a presence at this weekend's state finals in Normal, but not as a team. Senior standout Dylan Cervantes was the only Pioneer to survive the sectional cut.
Cervantes booked himself a solo trip to the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University. He carded a 76 Monday at the par-71 Metamora Fields course to qualify, but Alleman ended up finishing eighth out of 12 teams with 318 strokes.
Alleman finished two spots and one stroke behind another Western Big 6 Conference squad, Galesburg. The Silver Streaks also advanced a solo individual in senior Noah Benbow, who fired a 77.
The Pioneers' Conner Boyd seconded Cervantes by shooting an 81, with teammates Ryan Rochholz and Hunter Love shooting 81s. Alleman ended up 10 strokes behind team champion Morton, which was paced by Tommy Kuhl's winning round of 74.
Both Geneseo individuals competing at Metamora, Marshall Rice and Mick Haverland, fell short of state. Rice fired a 78 and finished just one stroke off the state cut, while Haverland carded an 88.
